Reporting directly to the Manager, Lab Operations the Technician, Buffer/Media & Lab Support will provide media preparation services, equipment management, and general lab support for the Research and Development team. Primary areas of responsibility include but are not limited to preparation of buffers and reagents to support small and large-scale protein purification as well as coordinating and organizing required services for laboratory equipment.The Technician, Buffer/Media & Lab Support will also provide support in the preparation of reagents and solutions for the analytical biochemistry group and media preparation for the upstream processing group. They will additionally provide general lab operations assistance related to supplies, equipment, and safety.



  • Support laboratory staff by fulfilling buffer/media requests, helping to maintain a consistent supply of common lab supplies, and performing data entry and analysis.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and strive to understand the needs of each laboratory group.
  • Daily preparation and sterilization of media, buffers, and stock solutions for laboratory use. Must maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Daily setup and maintenance of various lab equipment, including but not limited to balances and pH meters.
  • Analyze, maintain, and reconcile various certificates of analyses and safety data sheets, and ensure Pfenex documentation requirements are met.
  • Organize, maintain, and inventory commonly used laboratory supplies. Place orders for supplies as needed, specifically lab chemicals and reagents.
  • Track expenses and align with company goals for fiscal responsibility. Alert management of significant changes in levels of common materials used.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness and sanitation in the laboratory, practices good housekeeping at all times
  • Lead efforts to help keep the lab organized and operating efficiently.
  • Ensure that glass wash area, media prep room, and stock areas are clean and uncluttered.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing preventive maintenance as required, and requesting repairs.
  • Assist with the management of lab equipment by monitoring preventative maintenance & calibrations service schedules and coordinating equipment services.
  • Maintain the equipment database and assist with equipment setup, modification, and removal.
  • Perform and document required testing according to standard operating procedures including: autoclave testing as needed and monthly water quality testing.
  • Assist with pickup, wash, sterilization, and redistribution of glassware to storage locations as needed.
  • Assist with collection, replenishment, and sterilization of common lab supplies and microbial waste as needed.
  • Maintain the chemical inventory database and create periodically needed reports.
  • Assist with laboratory safety inspections, reports, and corrections.
  • Independently makes decisions and utilizes available resources to meet requirements.
  • Follow well defined work procedures and instructions.
  • Complete special projects with the lab support team; attending and participating in group and project meetings.
  • Appropriate escalation of concerns/problems to manager.



  • Associates in Science or equivalent required.
  • AS with 1-3 years of experience or BS with 0-3 years of experience in process development research, or GMP Manufacturing environment required.
  • Experience in Aseptic Technique, and Media/Buffer Preparation is required.

  • Occasional night and weekend work may be required.
  • Work Overtime, as required.



  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk; reach with hands and arms, use hands handle or feel.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull 30-40 pounds consistently; may be required to lift 40 pounds unassisted.
