The Upstream team at Pfenex is looking to bring on a talented Associate Scientist to join the team. In this role, the individual will support all projects within the Strain Engineering/Upstream Processing group. They will be responsible for the construction, screening and characterization of recombinant P. fluorescens strains in collaboration with others. They will utilize Omics technologies to support gene expression analyses. The ideal candidate will have experience with DNA constructs, PCR amplification, DNA sequencing/ analysis, a can do attitude and will be able to work cross functionally in a fast paced environment.



  • Accountable for personal technical goals which align with project goals 
  • May participate on cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to the execution of experiments, interpretation of data, to meet project milestones.
  • Perform efficient gene cloning experiments including the design of DNA constructs and primers, PCR amplification, DNA sequencing and analysis.
  • Contribute to the design and construction of various microbial strains, execute strain characterization procedures, and carry out and troubleshoot protocols for mutagenesis and
  • Become proficient in Omics technologies to evaluate data and support stain development
  • Perform protein analysis such as cell fractionation, SDS-PAGE gel and Western analysis 
  • Assist in the execution of high throughput (HTP) protein expression and quantitative analysis using appropriate statistical tests and software 
  • Deliver presentations that distill complex ideas and proactively communicate results and progress to technical teams and supervision 
  • Troubleshoot and improve protocols for increased speed or precision, as required
  • Identify and introduce new technologies and ways to improve assay performance and laboratory processes.
  • Author technical documents, including SOPs, that describe the methods used and operation of laboratory instruments/equipment or systems 
  • Capture IP through clear documentation of experiments and results
  • Expand breadth of skills through participation on projects which utilize diverse techniques or technologies 



  • PhD in molecular biology, bioinformatics or related field
  • BS/MS >3 years relevant experience
  • Proficient in molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation and digestion, DNA cloning, PCR/ QPCR, DNA/ RNA sequencing.
  • Background in current Omics based technologies (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics), bioinformatics tools and statistical analysis are preferred.
  • Must be proficient in DNA sequence analysis software, e.g. Sequencher, DNAstar, VectorNTI.
  • Good documentation practices are essential.
  • Knowledge of GLP compliance essential; knowledge of ISO9000, and cGMP regulatory guidelines desirable.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. JMP or other statistical package.
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Flexible hours essential, be available to troubleshoot equipment and process issues during off-hours.
