The 2nd  Shift Fermentation Technician supports continuous fermentation projects for Upstream Processing and occasional projects/ support for Downstream Processing and of Analytical Biochemistry teams opportunities/projects. As the primary person responsible for ensuring that experiments are running according to plan, attention to detail is critical and excellent documentation and communication skills are required. The fermentation technician also contributes data extraction and preliminary data analysis. The 2nd shift hours are 3:30pm - 2:00am.  This is a contract to hire role 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Prepares fermentation culture medium and assembles/sterilizes fermentation equipment
  • Carries out microbial fermentations and analyses according to batch records using good sterile technique
  • Ongoing utilization and monitoring of fermentation equipment and process control systems to ensure parameters are within specified operating ranges
  • Performs routine sampling of fermentations, ensuring accuracy of measurements
  • Performs minor mechanical and instrumentation troubleshooting; takes appropriate corrective action as needed
  • Completes batch records and enter fermentation data into databases and laboratory notebooks
  • Investigates raw materials and equipment suppliers as needed
  • Contacts research scientists for guidance in the event of unplanned experimental deviations; follows guidance and direction accordingly
  • Completes routine laboratory procedures ensuring accuracy and validity of results and assist with general laboratory procedures such as but not limited to preparation of solvents, buffers, resins, reagent solutions, media prep; measuring and dispensing of solid and liquid chemicals and raw materials (e.g., media & reagents)
  • Cleans and sterilizes fermentation equipment, instrumentation, materials and processing areas
  • Performs cell culture sterilization techniques
  • Executes on various projects as developed by Fermentation Scientists
  • Performs other laboratory housekeeping tasks as assigned including routine cleaning of laboratory benchtops and restocking of materials
  • Other duties as assigned or required

 

JOB SKILLS, ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare buffers, perform serial dilutions, and operate standard lab equipment (e.g., various pipettes, balances, pH meter)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, set priorities, and make decisions with general guidance and supervision
  • Detail oriented and highly organized with a strong technical acumen
  • Demonstrated experience of record tracking and coordinating
  • Exceptional communication (verbal, written) and organizational skills required
  • Ability to resolve problems and communicate status in a timely manner
  • Passion for biotechnology/science is required
  • Understanding of key scientific terms is required (e.g., assays; reagents; flasks; bioreactors; beakers; test tubes; pipets) including an understanding of inorganic chemical nomenclature
  • Understanding of basic microbial cell biology preferred
  • Ability to perform basic stoichiometric calculations and basic algebra required
  • Ability to interpret graphical representation of quantitative data (interpretation of x&y axes, time-based trends, data correlation, etc) required
  • Ability to effectively multi-task in order to meet deadlines and commitments
  • Ability to build long-term relationships easily and naturally
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, team-oriented, and self-directed entrepreneurial environment necessary
  • Extremely flexible with a positive and "can do" attitude
  • Must appreciate and respect the necessity for confidentiality
  • Demonstrated intermediate expertise utilizing MS Office (Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook)
  • Experience using LIMS systems and/or databases desired
