The Product Development Leader, will report directly to the CEO, driving the product development program for Pfenex's key pharmaceutical collaboration. This role will be responsible for leading the cross functional product development team internally and will be responsible for managing our strategic alignment with our collaborator . The ideal candidate should have previous experience managing large molecule biopharmaceutical products from development through commercial launch. We are looking for a candidate who has a passion for execution, has strong product development experience, has experience working in a matrixed organization and can work in a fast-paced environment.


Job Responsibilities

  • Leads the product development team consisting of cross-functional team members to execute product development plans and milestones
  • Leads and manages the collaboration relationship to ensure strategic alignment, efficient communication and sufficient resourcing to support product development
  • Provides program updates to the executive leadership team
  • Acts as the project champion by driving project meetings in partnership with the project manager
  • Monitors progress against the product development plan and work/resource allocation plans
  • Provides leadership and mentorship to team members with support from project management
  • Participates in the identification and selection of third-party service providers, including drafting of proposal requests, scopes of work and contractual agreements as needed
  • Responsible for managing and driving budget accountability

Leadership Capabilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrixed organizations
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Proven success in leading cross-functional teams to overcome unforeseen challenges and deliver on-time and within budget
  • Background in managing, developing and mentoring team members




  • 7+ years of relevant, progressive and broad-based scientific product development experience required
  • Demonstrated experience and/or exposure to large-molecule biopharmaceutical development from early process development, through cGMP manufacturing and clinical trials to marketing application
  • Experience working within strategic relationships (e.g., joint-ventures, collaborations, development partnerships, etc.)
  • Experience in Microsoft Project preferred
  • Experience working with Contract Service Providers preferred


  • 8+ years of relevant experience w/a bachelor's degree; or
  • 5+ years of relevant experience w/an advanced degree




  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk; reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel.
  • The employee is required to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
