Pfenex Drug Discovery Team is seeking a highly motivated, talented, detail-oriented Associate Scientist II/ Scientist with strong cell culture experience to conduct cell-based assay experiments in supporting novel target discovery and drug development.  


  • Conduct routine Western Blot, qPCR, ELISA, MSD, Flow Cytometry, cell-based assays
  • Assist in developing and optimizing new biochemical and cell-based assays to support preclinical research
  • Plan and executed experiments as required
  • Analyze data, keep meticulous record and maintain notebooks in accordance of company rules
  • Provide expertise to other colleagues in the company
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and perform general laboratory duties as required


  • BS, MS or PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or related field in Biomedical Sciences
  • Minimum 10+ years with B.S.; 8+ years of biotech/pharmaceutical industry experience is required for MS; minimum 3+ years of biotech/pharmaceutical industry experience is required for PhD
  • Early stage drug discovery / screening experience is preferred
  • Strong cell culture skills are required
  • Prior experience or expertise in GPCR cell-based assay development in 96- or 384-well format is preferred (Beta-arrestin, internalization, cAMP)
  • Experience with primary cell culture, human or/and rodent blood is a plus
  • Proficiency with ELISA, Western Blot, qPCR, MSD, Plate-assays (HTRF, luminescence)
  • Experience in Flow Cytometry, confocal microscopy, live cell imaging is a plus
  • Experience in developing and optimizing cell-based assays using various assay platforms is a plus
  • Experience in design and use of lentiviral vectors is a plus
  • Experience with liquid handling automation is desired
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GraphPad Prism; FlowJo is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills, able to multi-task and excited for hand-on laboratory research
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be a team player and perform at a high level in a matrixed drug discovery environment
  • Level will be commensurate with experience
