POSITION SUMMARY

As a member of the Strain Engineering team, the Strain Engineering Sr. Scientist will contribute to the continued development of the Pfenex Expression Technology platform. The successful candidate will oversee and participate in projects focused on the design, screening, and characterization of recombinant P. fluorescens protein production strains as part of a cross-functional product development team. The ability to work in a matrixed environment and drive innovations are key position attributes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as Strain Engineering/ Molecular Biology subject matter expert in the development and commercialization of biopharmaceutical products across several programs
  • Provides direct technical support to CMC data package for regulatory submission(s) as well as BLA, NDA, and/or IND regulatory review meetings
  • Keeps informed of latest advancements in molecular biology and related technologies, taking initiative to evaluate and present a case for acquisition of appropriate technologies to meet business needs. Influences successful adoption of new technologies across functional areas.
  • Seeks to understand capabilities across disciplines and use innovative, collaborative approaches for solving technical problems.
  • Captures IP through clear documentation of experimental results and assists in the preparation of invention
  • Delivers presentations that distill complex ideas and proactively communicate results and progress to technical
  • Actively creates, generates, and presents papers/presentations at scientific meetings
  • Mentors Scientist and Associate Scientist level employees in problem solving, equipment and process issues
  • Writes technical documents and protocols that describe the production strain and selection process with sufficient detail for successful transfer to CMOs for banking, characterization and manufacturing
  • Ensures laboratory safety practices/goals are followed and achieved

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS/MS/PhD in Biology/Microbiology/Biochemistry/Biochemical Engineering or related field
  • BS 8 years of relevant experience w/a minimum of 5 years of industry exp
  • or MS   5 years of relevant experience w/a minimum of 3 years of industry exp
  • or PhD 2 years of relevant industry experience
  • >5 years experience in microbial strain engineering and recombinant protein production
  • Proficient in recombinant DNA technology such as cloning, QPCR, DNA sequencing, and RNA seq
  • Background in current Omics based technologies (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics), bioinformatics tools and statistical analysis are preferred.
  • Positive and enthusiastic team member. Effective planning, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Good documentation practices are essential
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. JMP or other statistical package
  • Flexible hours essential, be available to troubleshoot equipment and process issues during off-hours.
  • Occasional travel may be needed.
